How To Decorate A Baby Nursery On A Tight Budget

October 4, 2025 by Collette S Leave a Comment

Looking for cheap and cheerful ways to make your baby’s room feel special?

Decorating your baby’s nursery doesn’t need to cost a fortune to look cute for your new little arrival. (If you think about it, your baby sleeps in your room for at least the first six months, anyway.)

In this post, I’m sharing all the quick and cheap ways you can create a dream nursery for your little one…

Decorate a nusery on a budget

Ways to save money on a baby nursery

Here are my top tips for creating a nursery room on a budget…

Paint the walls

A fresh lick of paint can completely transform a nursery without breaking the bank. Choosing soft, calming tones instantly creates a cosy, welcoming space for your little one.

It’s also one of the easiest DIY projects to tackle — and a fun way to add your own personal touch.

Whether you go for a classic neutral, a soft pastel, or a bold feature wall, paint is a budget-friendly way to make a big impact.

Upcycle existing furniture and fixtures

Before rushing out to buy everything new, have a look at what you already own.

A tired old chest of drawers can look beautiful with a coat of paint and some new handles, and a simple bookshelf can double up as a toy or book corner.

Upcycling not only saves money but also gives your nursery a unique, personal charm — plus, it’s kinder to the planet!

Consider wall stickers & decals

If you want to add personality without the commitment of wallpaper, large wall stickers or wall decals are a brilliant option like these ones from Nursery Stickers Co.

They’re affordable, easy to apply, and just as easy to remove when your baby grows or their interests change.

From whimsical animals to dreamy stars, there’s a design for every theme, and they instantly bring a touch of magic to plain walls.

Find preloved cheap and free nursery furniture

You’d be surprised at how many lovely nursery pieces can be found secondhand. Check out local online marketplaces, charity shops, and community groups for preloved or even free furniture.

Many parents are happy to pass on gently used items, which means you can save a fortune while giving good quality pieces a second life.

Shop affordable nursery accessories

It’s often the little details that make a nursery feel extra special. Think soft cushions, cute baskets, night lights, and cosy rugs.

You don’t need to spend a lot to achieve this. Budget-friendly shops like The Range, B&M and Home Bargains can help you add those sweet finishing touches without overspending.

While places like Dunelm are a little bit more expensive, you can still find sweet bargains like the sea hanging plaque above.

Accessories are also easy to swap out as your child grows, keeping the space fresh and fun.

Don’t overlook supermarkets like Asda and Morrisons for cute bits and bobs either. You can save even more money by using loyalty schemes and by ordering online using cashback sites.

Download digital nursery prints

Cute wall art doesn’t have to cost a fortune. There are so many beautiful digital nursery prints available online for just a few pounds on sites like Etsy or even free if you search on sites like Pinterest.

Simply download, print, and pop them into affordable frames for an instant gallery wall. It’s a simple way to bring colour, personality, and a touch of whimsy to the room.

Invest in furniture that will grow with them

If you do decide to buy new furniture, choose pieces that can adapt as your baby grows. A cot that converts into a toddler bed or a changing table that doubles as a dresser are great examples of this.

While these pieces may seem more expensive up front, they can save you money later down the line when it’s time to update their nursery into a toddler room, and then again into little girls or boys bedroom.

IKEA has a great range of baby and toddler room furniture, with options suitable for every budget.
